What is an HSG?
A hysterosalpingogram is a special X-ray procedure used to look at the inside of your uterus and fallopian tubes. It helps your doctor check for:
- Blockages in the fallopian tubes
- Changes in the shape or structure of the uterus
- Possible causes of infertility or recurrent miscarriage
How the Procedure Works
- Positioning – You’ll lie on an X-ray table, similar to a pelvic exam.
- Speculum Placement – A speculum is inserted into the vagina so the cervix can be cleaned.
- Catheter Insertion – A thin, soft tube is placed through your cervix.
- Contrast Dye Injection – A special dye flows into your uterus and fallopian tubes.
- X-ray Imaging – As the dye moves, your doctor takes pictures to show any blockages or abnormalities.
- Completion – The catheter and speculum are removed, and you can go home the same day.
The whole process usually takes 10–15 minutes.
How to Prepare
- Schedule between days 6–12 of your menstrual cycle (after bleeding stops, and before ovulation).
- Eat normally — fasting is not required.
- Take pain relief (ibuprofen or tylenol) 30–60 minutes before your appointment unless any doctor has said these are not safe medications for you.
What We Hope to Learn from an HSG
- Whether your fallopian tubes are open or blocked
- Whether your uterus has fibroids, polyps, scarring, or shape changes
- Next steps in your fertility evaluation or treatment plan
Pain and Anxiety Management
Some people find the procedure to be relatively painless, or feel only mild cramping; others feel moderate discomfort. Options include:
- Over-the-counter NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) before the test
- Local numbing medication at the cervix
- Pro-Nox® (nitrous oxide/oxygen mix): You breathe it in during the procedure. It works quickly, reduces anxiety and pain, and wears off within minutes so you can drive yourself home. CRE is one of the few fertility centers in Dallas who offer this pain management option.
